Designing Workshops For Communities

Overview

 Preserving Heritage • Empowering Communities • Reviving Craft Traditions  


Our Community Design Workshops are designed to create awareness, appreciation and practical understanding of India’s rich textile and craft heritage. These workshops aim to educate individuals, artisans, students and creative enthusiasts about traditional Indian fashion techniques while exploring ways to integrate them into the contemporary design world.


The initiative focuses on craft revival, skill development and sustainable livelihood awareness, ensuring that traditional art forms continue to thrive in modern fashion and design practices.

Workshop Objectives

 

  • To create awareness about India’s diverse textile and craft traditions. 
  • To revive and preserve traditional embroidery and handcraft techniques. 
  • To provide hands-on exposure to heritage crafts. 
  • To explore ways to integrate traditional crafts into modern fashion and lifestyle products. 
  • To encourage sustainable and ethical design practices within communities

1. Understanding Indian Craft Heritage


 Participants are introduced to the history, cultural significance, and regional identity of India’s traditional crafts. This session builds a deeper appreciation for handcraft traditions and their role in the fashion industry.


 Key Topics :

  • Overview of Indian textile traditions 
  • Role of crafts in cultural identity 
  • Importance of craft preservation 
  • Understanding artisan communities


Outcome:

 

  •  Participants gain a deeper appreciation of the craft and learn how it can be adapted for modern garments and textiles. 

 2. Chikankari Revival Workshop 


  This module focuses on the revival and authentic understanding of Chikankari, a delicate and historically significant embroidery technique originating from Lucknow. 


 Key Topics :


  • History and evolution of Chikankari 
  • Understanding authentic stitches and patterns 
  • Introduction to traditional motifs 
  • Hands-on practice of basic stitches 
  • Identifying genuine craftsmanship vs. machine work


Outcome:

 

  •  Participants gain a deeper appreciation of the craft and learn how it can be adapted for modern garments and textiles. 

 3. Zari & Zardozi Embroidery Techniques 


 This session introduces the intricate world of Zari and Zardozi embroidery, historically used in royal garments and ceremonial textiles.

  • Understanding traditional zari materials 
  • Introduction to Zardozi embroidery techniques 
  • Traditional motifs and design patterns 
  • Demonstration by skilled artisans 
  • Contemporary applications in fashion and accessories

 4. Craft Adaptation for the Modern World  


 To ensure crafts remain relevant, participants learn how traditional techniques can be adapted into modern fashion and lifestyle products

 5. Interaction with Artisans
